This article about making money with affiliate and/or associate marketing may strike a nerve with some people. However, it's something that I believe both new and old marketers need to know about because the competition on the internet regarding these programs is getting greater even though the money is there to be made.
So let me show you what I learned about making money as an affiliate or an associate for internet programs. I'll share one money making fiasco that from testing more than a decade of money making ventures on the internet that demonstrates the problems both with affiliate marketing and associate marketing.
I became an associate for Hand Technologies to make some extra money. I wanted it to turn into a full time income. As I recall this money-making venture cost me $250 upfront and then $15.00 per month for my ecommerce website.
I could just sell the products and make money, or I could build a team of technology consultants and make money through override commissions by managing a team. I chose to make money by building a team. After a year and a half I had built a team of 85 technology consultants throughout the country. Make no mistake, making this money was hard work. My team grossed about $30,000 a month in product sales and I was one of the companies highest monthly recruiters for two months.
What happened to this little money maker? The company was sold. The purchaser of the company changed the rules. Each of us would have to pay our fees all over again, start with zero people on our teams and pay twice as much for our ecommerce sites each month.
Many money generating programs on the internet are the same way. The problem is simple. I call it "Ownership." If you don't own the product or the program then you don't make the rules. You don't get to say when it lives and when it dies. If you are just riding along to make money with some other company and the rules can change at any time, the products can change at any time and the amount of money you are allowed to make can be changed at any time without notice and without your permission.
Over a decade or so this has happened to me with other money-making ventures not just once or twice but eight times!
Some programs will remain around for quite some time, but the problem with affiliate and associate marketing is that you are not in control of the product, the rules, or the company that runs things.
If you want to build some short-term money then there are lots of money making ventures that will work just fine. Yet if you want to replace your full-time income and build true wealth there is no security because you only have control of a very small part of the money making process.
Can you create your own money making company? Absolutely! Can you have control over a great money making product that will stand the test of time? Most Certainly! Is it harder than just riding on the good idea of another person? Plan on it!. Is it more secure to make money this way and own your own business? By far!
In the end, if you are going to be an affiliate of associate marketer, be realistic and diversify. I'm not an advocate of long-term money or security from affiliate and associate marketing. I believe the safest and most secure way to build an income on the internet is to build something that you own and that you control. It makes sense doesn't it? If it's going to be your money, your long-term plan, and your security . . . then shouldn't it be your company within your control.
Building your own money making venture may be more difficult. All it takes is one good idea properly executed. What is more difficult though . . . working harder to build your money making enterprise once and running it for your own long term success, OR building affiliate programs and associate programs that come and go and can just be taken from you by the company that truly owns them.
Build your own dream . . . not theirs! You can do it!
